What can you actually put in a dumpster?

Quick answer

Most household junk, construction debris, furniture, and yard waste can go in a standard roll-off dumpster. Heavy material — concrete, dirt, brick, asphalt — needs to go in a dedicated 10-yard heavy-debris bin instead of a larger open-top. When in doubt about a specific item, call or text 619-629-4751 before you load it.

Generally accepted materials

  • Furniture, mattresses, and couches
  • Household appliances (stove, dishwasher, washer/dryer)
  • Construction debris: wood, drywall, flooring, trim
  • Yard waste: branches, sod, leaves
  • Boxes, clothing, general household clutter
  • Carpet, rugs, and padding

Heavy material has its own bin

Concrete, dirt, brick, block, asphalt, and similar dense debris are accepted, but only in the dedicated 10-yard heavy-debris bin. Loading these materials into a 20, 30, or 40-yard bin isn't allowed because a full load would exceed what the truck can legally haul on the road.

Items that need a heads-up call first

A handful of items are technically allowed but need special handling, so it's worth mentioning them when you book rather than discovering an issue at pickup.

  • Refrigerators and AC units with refrigerant still inside
  • Large pianos or safes
  • Anything unusually heavy and concentrated in one spot of the bin

Mixing heavy material into a standard bin is the most common reason a load gets flagged at the scale — keep them separated.

What's never allowed

Hazardous and regulated materials can't go in any dumpster, for safety and disposal-facility reasons. See our companion guide on prohibited items for the full list and where to take them instead.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put a mattress in a dumpster?

Yes, mattresses are generally accepted in a standard roll-off dumpster.

Can appliances go in a dumpster?

Most appliances are fine. Refrigerators and AC units with refrigerant need that refrigerant removed first — call us and we'll explain the easiest path.

What about a mix of concrete and regular trash?

Tell us upfront if a load will mix heavy material with general debris — it may need to be billed and sorted differently than a pure heavy or pure light load.

Can I fill the dumpster above the top?

No. Loads need to stay level with the top rail so the bin can be hauled safely and legally.
